Yes — and it is one of the very few anti-aging claims in skincare backed by a randomized controlled trial. In a 4.5-year study of 903 adults published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, people assigned to daily sunscreen use showed 24% less skin aging than people who applied sunscreen only when they felt they needed it. Not a cream with a proprietary complex, not a serum with a trendy active. Plain broad-spectrum sunscreen, applied every day.

The catch is in that last phrase. The trial didn't compare a special sunscreen against an ordinary one; it compared daily use against discretionary use. The anti-aging ingredient, in other words, was consistency. Here's what the evidence actually says, where its limits are, and what it changes about your morning routine.

What the Trial Actually Measured

The study, run in Nambour, Australia, randomized adults under 55 into two groups: one instructed to apply broad-spectrum SPF 15+ sunscreen to the head, neck, arms, and hands every morning, and one left to use sunscreen at their own discretion. After 4.5 years, researchers measured photoaging with skin-surface microtopography — silicone impressions of the back of the hand that record fine lines the way a record groove records sound. Graded blind, those impressions turn "looks older" into a number.

The daily-use group aged visibly less: 24% lower odds of increased photoaging (relative odds 0.76). Two details matter for anyone reading this in 2026:

  • The sunscreen was only SPF 15+. Daily application of a modest SPF beat occasional application of whatever the occasional users reached for. Frequency won, not strength.
  • The discretionary group wasn't avoiding sunscreen. They used it the way most people do: at the beach, on obviously sunny days. That pattern, the pattern most of us follow, is what produced measurably older skin.

The comparison is also why no product claim can borrow this result. Nothing in the trial was proprietary. What was tested was a behavior, and the behavior is available to anyone who owns any broad-spectrum sunscreen.

The Same People Were Watched for Melanoma, Too

Photoaging was not the only endpoint that came out of Nambour. The same cohort was tracked for a decade after the trial ended, and the melanoma follow-up published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found 11 new primary melanomas in the daily-sunscreen group against 22 in the discretionary group (hazard ratio 0.50).

Read that carefully, because the honest version is more useful than the headline. For melanoma overall, the result sat just outside the conventional threshold for statistical significance (P = .051) — close, but the kind of "close" that researchers are trained not to overstate. For invasive melanoma, the more dangerous category, the reduction was clearer: 3 cases versus 11 (hazard ratio 0.27).

Two caveats travel with those numbers. The cohort was white adults in subtropical Queensland, among the highest-UV inhabited places on earth, so the absolute risk reduction won't transfer cleanly to every reader. And melanoma is rare enough that 33 total cases is a thin dataset. What the follow-up does establish is direction: the same daily habit that slowed visible aging did not trade one benefit against another. The wrinkle result and the cancer result point the same way.

Why Sunlight Ages Skin on Cloudy Days Too

Wrinkles from sun exposure are mostly a UVA story. UVB rays burn the skin's surface; UVA rays penetrate deeper into the dermis, where they degrade the collagen and elastin that keep skin firm. The American Academy of Dermatology distinguishes the two plainly: UVB are the burning rays, UVA the aging rays — and broad-spectrum sunscreen exists precisely because SPF alone only describes UVB protection. UVA is also the reason "I wasn't in the sun today" undercounts your exposure. UVA levels stay comparatively steady through cloud cover and across seasons, which is why the AAD's guidance is to protect your skin every day you'll be outside, rain or shine. The incidental twenty minutes of walking, driving, and waiting all accumulate in the dermis, invisibly, for years before they surface as lines and spots.

That same AAD survey found a gap worth sitting with: about half of Americans worry about skin aging, yet many still skip daily sunscreen. The evidence says those two positions don't reconcile.

What Photoaging Looks Like on Deeper Skin Tones

If you read the Nambour result and thought "wrinkles aren't my concern," you may be right about the symptom and wrong about the cause. Photoaging doesn't present identically across skin tones. Reviews of photoprotection for people with skin of colour in the British Journal of Dermatology describe visible photoaging arriving later — often in the fifth or sixth decade — and showing up primarily as pigmentary change and laxity rather than the fine lines that dominate the conversation in lighter skin.

That reframes the stakes rather than removing them. Uneven tone, dark patches, and melasma are the endpoint that daily UV exposure is quietly building toward, and unlike a wrinkle, pigmentation can arrive fast after a single unprotected weekend and then take months to fade.

One honest boundary belongs here. Melanin-rich skin is also more reactive to visible light, the part of the spectrum your eyes can see, which no UV filter is designed to block.
